Garden Creating

In Japanese, fueki ryuko (permanence and fashionability) means incorporating new change that is based upon the essence of what remains unchanged and must not be changed.
These words lay at the very foundation of our garden creation activities.
Japanese gardens have varied widely with the times, from the dry landscape garden (karesansui) that emerged from the rise of Zen Buddhism through the tea garden's emergence from the popularity of the tea ceremony.
At the foundation of Japanese garden creation, however, lies a living philosophy and aesthetic awareness that has existed since ancient times.
The garden creation philosophy of fueki (permanence) and the garden creation that meets the needs of the present day of ryuko (fashionability) are both indispensable elements for passing on Japanese gardens to the next generation. Through the philosophy, aesthetic awareness, and solid skills we have passed down from one generation to another, Ueyakato Landscape creates gardens that meet the current trend of the time by firmly basing ourselves upon tradition.

Here's how our garden creation process works, from the moment we receive your inquiry through your garden's completion.

1. Receiving your consultation

After receiving your inquiry, we conduct a detailed consultation to ask about your garden’s location and size, your schedule and budget, and any requests you have. If possible, we then conduct an onsite visit. Based on this consultation, we provide an estimate for survey, planning, and design work. Once a price is agreed upon, the following work begins to create your garden.

2, Basic survey (Japan)

We survey the site's current condition, including measurements for existing trees and stones.
If you plan to build on the property during garden creation, please introduce us to your architectural design firm and construction company. This will allow us to share information and make decisions together.

3. Planning

Now we consider a garden design.
We present a proposal based on easy to understand materials that include a plan proposal, perspective drawings, and sample images. At that time, we will also provide a rough estimate for the construction cost.

4. Design

Next comes concrete design work. We create design drawings including necessary information such as dimensions and finished looks for each garden element, main trees and stones, waterscaping, and lighting. After we have agreed on a price, a construction contract is created and construction preparation begins. Once design content has been decided, we will provide you with an estimate for construction expenses.

5. Construction

Now it's time to move ahead with construction. Trees and stones are all one of a kind items, so their final positions are decided at the construction site. Any changes significantly departing from the original design are made only after receiving the client's approval.
Once construction is complete, we conduct an inspection with the client.

6. Fostering

It is said that garden work is 40% creation, 60% management. Over time, a garden's plants grow and its surrounding environment changes. Thus, the end of a garden's construction is not its completion. We strive not only to maintain gardens, but to foster them toward the future. Starting from the garden's construction phase, we provide proposals for how to nurture it.

2. Basic survey (Overseas)

We visit the site scheduled for garden creation and survey its width, climate, and surrounding scenery. While we do so, we also listen carefully to what kind of garden the client wants to create. Please tell us the budget you have in mind. We can also accommodate online consultations via Zoom and other web conference tools. An English-language interpreter with specialist knowledge of Japanese landscaping will be present at meetings.

3. Planning

A garden design is created from the information gained during the basic survey and the client's requests. Using concept photographs and 3D perspectives, we provide an easily comprehensible image of the finished garden. We can also provide online explanations with respect to materials.

4. Design

Concrete design work proceeds based on a plan. From the necessary number of materials to piping routes, a design including all necessary information for construction is created. If clients prefer, they can also choose the stones and plants they want for their garden themselves.

5. Procuring materials

Based on the plan, we survey how much of the necessary materials can be supplied at the construction site area. Materials can also be exported from Japan as necessary.

6. Construction

During construction, we dispatch garden technicians from Kyoto to supervise staff at the site. Garden creation based on a design plan proceeds by cooperating with local builders.
