Ueyakato Landscape gardener Takahito Oka and Kana Goto of our Environmental Culture Planning Division gave a guided tour of Konkai Komyo-ji Temple for a Maimai Kyoto sponsored event. They spoke about how the temple’s giant Osmanthus tree is pruned, demonstrated how to rake gravel ripples for a dry landscape garden, and gave a tour of the temple’s Abbot Hall and Shiun Garden, both of which are usually closed to the public. Also, as a special rainy-day program, they also showed how a gardener creates a “hachi-niwa” (or bowl garden). For our participants, it was an occasion for all to experience the gardener’s skills up close.
