On February 28, 2026, the Heritage and Garden Artistry Division’s Michael Shapiro gave an online lecture to the United Kingdom’s Japanese Garden Society (JGS), entitled “Kyoto Gardens in Plain English: Communicating Japanese Gardening Aesthetics and Techniques to the World.” The lecture’s content was addressed to those involved or interested in Japanese gardens in the United Kingdom. As a foreigner working for a Kyoto landscaping firm, Michael therefore presented on how to communicate information about historical gardens in language that is easy to understand across different cultural backgrounds. Because Ueyakato Landscape is active not only in garden management, but also garden design and construction, we were able to share a broad range of information with JGS’s audience.
