Ueyakato Landscape and Portland Japanese Garden co-hosted “Meet the Niwashi,” an online get-together for gardeners
On June 5 2026, Ueyakato Landscape and Portland Japanese Garden held a session of “Meet the Niwashi,” an online get-together aimed at sharing the skills of Japanese gardening.
We listened to Portland Japanese Garden’s Garden Curator Hugo Torii and other gardeners share their experiences while watching videos of their work. Shigeyoshi Takemura of our Gardening Division and Michael Shapiro of our Heritage and Garden Artistry Division also shared their views of Japanese garden management in Kyoto.
We have been holding this event with Portland Japanese Garden for the last four years. With each session, our understanding of differences in climate and cultural background deepens, leading to a meaningful exchange that contributes to the advancement of gardening
skills in both our regions.
