On August 28, Michael Shapiro of the Heritage and Garden Artistry Division gave a lecture for an online study session sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association to an audience of
over eighty volunteer guides. The lecture introduced useful perspectives for conveying the allure of Japanese gardens to guests from different cultural backgrounds besides Japan, and focused on guided tours at Murin-an, a modern Japanese garden masterpiece managed by Ueyakato Landscape. Participants enthusiastically asked questions, and after the lecture, there was a lively discussion about how to respond to specific situations that volunteer guides often encounter.
We hope the lecture will be useful for those helping to share Tokyo’s many cultural property gardens with the public!
