At the 58th IFLA World Congress (August 31-September 2, 2022) held in Gwangju, Korea, Ueyakato Landscape president Tomoki Kato presented a lecture on “Preservation Policies for Historical Gardens in Japan and Cases of Restoring and Civic Use of Gardens that are Cultural Properties.”

As a global organization for landscape architecture, IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) is involved in joint efforts with ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites) and other groups to conserve cultural landscapes throughout the world. Kato was invited to participate in a special session reconsidering the Florence Charter, ICOMOS' charter for the protection of historic gardens.

As a company intimately involved in passing down Kyoto’s historic gardens to future generations, this congress was an invaluable opportunity for us to participate in a global conversation on how to conserve landscapes as essential parts of our cultural heritage. In the future, we eagerly look forward to more opportunities to contribute to this vital discussion from the Japanese perspective.
