On January 13, 2023, Tomohiko Muto was a lecturer for the winter program of Williams College. This program started in 2017 and introduces students to the craftsmen behind the spirituality and lifestyle of Kyoto’s traditional culture. In his lecture, Muto addressed the teachings of the Sakuteiki (Records of Garden Creation), Japan’s oldest garden creation manual, and explained how the concepts of “shin” (formal) “gyo” (semi-formal) and “so” (informal) can be used to understand how Japanese gardens are organized spatially. We received many enthusiastic questions and opinions from students. We hope the lecture provided an opportunity to think about how human beings interact with nature through gardens. *This program was planned and organized by Perspective.
