On March 28, 2021, Ueyakato Landscape gardener Takahito Oka and Kana Goto of our Environmental Culture Planning Division gave a guided tour of Konkai Komyo-ji Temple for a Mai Mai Kyoto sponsored event. After walking through the temple precincts and looking at cherry blossoms in full bloom, there was a guided tour of the temple’s Abbott Hall and the Shiun Garden, both of which are usually closed to the public.
There was a demonstration of how to rake gravel ripples in a dry landscape garden, tree pruning instruction, and as a special rainy-day program, a presentation of how a garden craftsman creates a Japanese-style “bowl garden” (hachi niwa).
In addition to enjoying the views of a beautiful moss garden freshly moistened by the rain and fantastic weeping cherries, participants also had the chance to experience the techniques of a garden craftsman up close.
