Ueyakato Landscape gardener Takahito Oka and Kana Goto of our Environmental Culture Planning Division gave a guided tour of Konkai Komyo-ji Temple for NHK Culture Seminar “Konkai Komyo-ji Temple in Spring Bloom: A Tour of a Garden Closed to the Public Given by its Exclusive Gardener.”
After a talk by one of the temple’s monks about the life of temple founder St. Honen, a guided tour was given of the temple’s Abbott Hall in which the building’s history and also its connection to Japanese history was explained. In the Abbott Hall's Nantei Garden and Shiun Garden, participants experienced how to rake gravel ripples in a dry landscape garden, watched a demonstration of how pines are pruned, and enjoyed a lecture on landscaping methods such as how viewing points and allusive motifs are incorporated into Japanese garden scenery.
There were lots of exciting questions, and the event turned into an opportunity for participants to understand the daily gardening fostering activities of our gardeners.
