Nanzen-ji Temple

Nanzen-ji Temple was originally built in the late thirteenth century as the imperial villa of Cloistered Emperor Kameyama.

Nanzen-in Temple

The garden at Nanzen-in Temple is a classic strolling pond garden of the late Kamakura period.

Dainei-ken Garden

Dainei-ken is located on the former premises of Dainei-in Temple, one of Nanzen-ji's sub-temples during the Edo period (1603-1868).

Shosei-en Garden

Shosei-en is a garden that belongs to Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, the head temple of the Otani school of Shin Buddhism, but is detached from its main temple grounds.

Otani Mausoleum (Otani Sobyo) Flower bed (Japanese Calligraphy)

Ōtani Mausoleum belongs to the Shinshū Ōtani-ha branch of Jōdo Shinshū (Shin Buddhism).

Namba Betsuin Temple, Sakai Branch

The Sakai branch of Namba Betsuin Temple is said to have been built in 1603 by Kyonyo (1558-1614), the twelfth head monk of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple.

Chisyaku-in Temple

Chishaku-in Temple is the head temple of the Chisan sect of Shingon Buddhism.

Kurodani, Konkai-Komyoji Temple

Facing the abbot hall of Konkai Komyo-ji Temple, one of the eight head temples of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism, there are two gardens known as the Shiun Garden and the Path of Encounters (Goen no Michi).

Hyakumanben Chion-ji Temple

Chion-ji Temple is also known by the more proper name of Hyakumanben Chion-ji Temple.

Seigan-ji Temple

Seigan-ji Temple is said to have been constructed in 667 by the imperial decree of Emperor Tenchi.

Murin-an Garden

Murin-an was built in 1896 as the villa of Yamagata Aritomo, one of the leading statesman during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Tairyu-Sanso Garden

Tairyu-Sanso is located on the former site of a Nanzen-ji sub-temple.

Ka-iu-so Garden

Kaiu-so is a large 19,880m² garden created on the former site of a Nanzen-ji sub-temple dissolved by the government during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Nanzen-ji Junsei Shoin Garden

Junsei Shoin（literally "Junsei Study Hall") was originally a medical school established in 1839 by Shingu Ryotei, a famous doctor schooled in Western learning.

FUKUJUEN Kyoto Flagship Store: “The Garden in the Sky”

Fukujuen was founded in 1790. Today it might be called a comprehensive trading company that not only sells tea but also aims to carry on and continue creating the tea culture of the Uji region of Kyoto prefecture.

HOSHINOYA Kyoto

Kyoto's Arashiyama area has long been known as a site of scenic beauty. During the Heian period (794-1185), Japanese royalty such as Emperor Kanmu and other nobility members often came here on sightseeing excursions.

Yosui-en Garden

The history of Yosui-en is said to begin when Hosokawa Mitsumoto, deputy to Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, third shogun of the Muromachi period(1333-1603), built his residence here.

Kyozomekaikan Kyozome-no-niwa

Founded during the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Kyozome-kai (Kyoto Dyed Products Association) has both carried on the essence of Kyoto's traditional craftsmanship and artistry and pushed it forward.

Gabo-en at Matsumoto Sake Brewing Co., Ltd.

The Matsumoto Sake Brewery in Kyoto's Fushimi area is a company with a longstanding history that has provided premium quality sake for over two centuries since its founding in 1791.

Ogura-hyakunin-isshu Project

The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (known in English as “One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each”) is a poetry anthology created in the thirteenth century by the scholar Fujiwara no Teika by selecting a hundred poems by a hundred poets from the Collection of Japanese Poems from Ancient and Modern Times (Kokin Wakashu) and the Later Collection of Japanese Poems Continued (Shokugosen Wakashu).

Keihanna Commemorative Park

Named Suikei-en (or "Waterscape Garden"), this strolling garden was created in Kansai Culture and Science City Commemorative Park (also known as Keihanna Commemorative Park) to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the Heian capital's founding in present-day Kyoto.

Arashiyama Villa

The Arashiyama Villa is a newly built company recreation facility located not too far away from Tenryu-ji Temple.

Software Service Inc. – Head Office Rooftop Garden

This garden is a rooftop garden above the head office of Software Service Inc., located nearby Shin-Osaka Station.

Private Home Garden “Bansei Seiryu-no-Niwa”

This private domestic garden is located in a residential neighborhood of Seki City in Gifu Prefecture and was created in response to a request for a traditional Kyoto-style garden that would harmonize with a newly built home featuring a modern design.

This private residential garden, located not too far from Nanzen-ji Temple, was created to complement a house newly built on the property as a second home.

The Westin Miyako Kyoto

The Westin Miyako Hotel Kyoto lies not too far away from Kyoto's Nanzen-ji Temple and in the background features Mt. Kacho, which is also the honorific mountain name (sango)* that is prefixed to the name of Chion-ji Temple, the head temple of Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhism.

Kyoto Okazaki Villa

Located in the Okazaki area of Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, this property had a main house and garden on it thought to have originally been made during the Taisho period (1912-26).

Hoshino Resorts KAI Kaga

The gardens at Hoshino Resorts KAI Kaga were created according to the concept of "local place." They are gardens that make maximum use of both Ishikawa Prefecture's "local figures" (things and people) and traditional Kyoto technique.

HOSHINOYA Tokyo

Located in the heart of Tokyo, in the Otemachi business district, Hoshinoya Tokyo's outdoor space was spatially designed by Studio Onsite president Hiroki Hasegawa, and condenses together motifs that fuse its concept of a "Japanese ryokan" (traditional Japanese inn) setting with a modern sensibility.

Warin-an

Even among the garden villas in the Nanzen-ji Temple neighborhood, Warin-an (formerly the Kamahara Tatsuya residence) is a celebratedly outstanding garden.

Ubusuna-no-sato TOMIMOTO

The Japanese garden at Ubusuna-no-sato TOMIMOTO was created as a garden befitting the birthplace of Japanese potter and Living National Treasure Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963) by making effective use of stones and trees used in the original garden that existed here.

River Retreat Garaku Restaurant L’évo Front “Rivage Garden”

River Retreat Garaku is an intimate luxury hotel on the shore of the Jinzu River in Toyama City.

Greentown, Cháo Míng Project (Hangzhou, China)

This garden was created in the heart of Hangzhou (a former capital of China) in response to a commission by Greentown China.

Kyoto International Conference Center: Japanese Garden (strolling pond garden)

Kyoto International Conference Center (hereafter, ICC) was opened in May 1966 as Japan’s first international conference center.

Kyoto International Conference Center New Hall

In October 2018, the Kyoto International Conference Center opened a New Hall with a design that complements the existing Event Hall.

Koto Heian no Yado Kanade

Koto Heian no Yado Kanade is an accommodation facility that opened in the Okazaki area of Kyoto's Sakyo Ward in 2017.

Yogen-ji Temple “Kenkan-tei”

Yogen-ji Temple of the Hongan-ji school of Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) sect of Buddhism in Kaizuka, Osaka is one of five temples belonging to Gansen-ji Temple, the central temple in the Kaizuka Jinai-machi area. This garden was designed and constructed in 2017-18.

The Former Retreat of Tomomi Iwakura

The Former Retreat of Tomomi Iwakura consists mainly of the building where Iwakura, a nobleman and politician active during the mid- to late-nineteenth century, spent three years just before Japan emerged as a modern nation-state.

Daitsu-ji Temple’s Ganzanken Garden and Rantei Garden

Affectionately known as "Nagahama Gobo," the Shinshu Otani denomination's Nagahama Betsu-in Daitsu-ji Temple makes up the core of the Jodo Shinshu temples in Shiga prefecture's Kohoku area.

Fukuda Art Museum

Fukuda Art Museum is a private museum opened in October 2019 in Arashiyama, a scenic area that is synonymous with Kyoto.

Kyoto Sagano Sansho Villa

Kyoto Sagano Sansho Villa is a personal residence newly built Kyoto City's Ukyo Ward. Ueyakato Landscape planned, design, and built the villa's garden, which occupies approximately 3/4 of the property.

Nanzen-ji Temple Taki-no-ma

Nanzen-ji Temple's Taki-no-ma ("Waterfall Room") lies immediately to the right of the administrative office acting as the main temple building's visitor entrance.

Washu-an

Washū-an is a garden in Kyoto located on the main avenue leading toward Nanzen-ji Temple. Its property was originally home to a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan).

Kyoto Porta, West Area

Kyoto Porta is an underground commercial facility located on the north side of Kyoto Station. In Italian, “porta” means “gateway” or “entrance.” And ever since Kyoto Porta’s opening in 1980, people have treasured it as a shopping district directly connected to Kyoto Station, main entrance into the international tourism city of Kyoto.

H Residence

For H Residence, located in a quiet residential area of Kagoshima City, Ueyakato Landscape received a request to create a dry landscape garden inside an existing interior garden space.

Brillia Tower HAMARIKYU

Brillia Tower HAMARIKYU is a 32-floor tower apartment building located a five-minute walk from Hamamatsu-chō Station (JR line) and nearby Kyū-Shiba Rikyū Garden (Project commissioner:Tokyo Tatemono Co., Ltd.).

Taka Ishii Gallery Kyoto

Located in front of the Sugimoto Residence, one of Japan’s Important Cultural Properties, Taka Ishii Gallery Kyoto is an art gallery that makes maximum use of the allure of a “Kyo-machiya” house (traditional Kyoto townhouses known as “eel beds” for their narrow but profoundly extensive depth) built approximately 150 years ago.

Sandscape Garden

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Bulgari's constantly evolving "Serpenti" icon, "Serpenti: 75 Years of Infinite Tales" was exhibited in Tokyo's Omotesando area.

Higashi Hongan-ji Temple’s Civic Green Space (Ohigashi-san Hiroba Square)

Higashi Hongan-ji Temple’s Civic Green Space (Ohigashi-san Hiroba Square) is located in front of the temple's gate just a few minutes away from Kyoto Station. As part of its efforts to activate the Kyoto Station area, Kyoto City had been considering how to put this green space to more active use, and it turned out that Higashi Hongan-ji Temple was also interested in using the space to make its temple more accessible to the local neighborhood.

Known as one of Japan's premium luxury hotels, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo has a garden so expansive it has been called an "urban oasis."
